Enniskillen Inspired by The Happy Prince

This painting is a tribute to the creativity of Enniskillen and nod to Oscar Wilde's Happy Prince tale.

It’s believed that Oscar Wilde got the inspiration for the prince from Cole’s Monument as he spent 7 years in Enniskillen at Portora School where he could see the monument from his dormitory window. 
The view of the painting is from the top of Cole’s Monument so it is in the perspective of the Happy Prince. It’s composed from all my own reference photos. I went up Cole’s Monument in September 2024, the views are absolutely stunning and I took loads of photos! 
In the tale a swallow helped the prince so it was such a joy to be able to include one of my favourite birds in this piece. The painting features three which each have a touch of gold on them in tribute to the story.
I love painting wildlife and hope this also helps to highlight the wildlife we have around us.

The scene is jam packed full of detail, there's something different to spot each time you look at it! The original painting took over 50 hours to complete.
