Bilberry Sunday
On the last Sunday in July, people have long gathered on Benlaughlin Mountain to pick bilberries — and according to local folklore, a mythical white horse appears on that day to predict the future to those who have come. Benlaughlin means peak of the speaking horse.
This painting is a joyful tribute to that tradition. Benlaughlin was a delight to paint, and I’ve included the white horse and her foal as a nod to the legend, bilberries tucked into each corner, and a pair of swallows in the summer sky above.
